People Measures is 10. Really??! Already??!

People Measures was founded in 2006 by Nick Carter and Frances Feenstra. They didn’t set out to build a company, they merely wanted to do meaningful work, away from the constraints of the global consulting firms they had both worked in up until that time. The initial work was primarily associate work with a select group of consulting companies and other work with clients with whom they had established relationships.

As happens, the business and the demand for their services started to grow at a pace they found difficult to keep up with and they looked around for others to join them in what was now a burgeoning enterprise. Soon after, Angela Bridges joined Nick and Frances in the business, bringing a much needed injection of commercial savvy and experience. Strategic plans as well as systems and processes were established. In many ways this was the real start. People Measures now started to take on the appearance of a true small business rather than just being a company name.

Not long after People Measures took on its first 2 paid members of staff, Penelope Kypuros and Cameron Czerczyk who were instrumental in building the business and its culture. A new brand, a new logo, a new space. Now, we were truly off and running!

Ah yes the new space….let’s not forget the premises. From our start in the living room of a small 1950’s flat in Elwood, and a subsequent co-location with our friends the Curve Group, we have been in our current, much loved, location at 253 Moray Street, South Melbourne since May 2010.

The move to Moray Street coincided with Anthony Ball joining the business as a director and Teresa Reed as our first permanent administrator and creator of the world’s best gluten free cakes. We were now becoming known not just for the quality of our work, but also the quality of our morning teas!

Out of a desire to both meet our clients’ growing demand for our services, and further bolster senior level capability in the team we employed Anna Heywood in Melbourne and also had a need to establish a presence in NSW so a new Sydney based director, Jamie Sims, joined us.

To fill up the desk space in our funky office, we continued to employ staff with Bonnie Richards, Leya Snider, Chloe Kypuros, and Tracey Galea joining the team over the next few years. An important component of the People Measures team over the years, has been (and continues to be) a constant stream of postgraduate placement students and student volunteers, too numerous to mention by name, but who nonetheless have made a significant contribution to the business.

We should also thank the people who have partnered with us over the years. All of our partners and associates have been generous in sharing their knowledge, expertise, time and effort with us and they inevitably make us look better than we would on our own. We thank them all, and hope the relationships will continue for a long time to come.

Much of the credit for our success must, of course, go to our clients. Over the past 10 years we have been involved in some wonderful projects with fantastic clients. We cannot list all of our clients here as there are by now too many of them, however there is one person who should be mentioned.  Louise Meadows, now at Melbourne Water and previously at NAB, took a chance and worked with us on our first truly ‘grown-up’ project; assessment for succession in the Finance area at NAB. Many other projects have flowed from that initial work, both at NAB and with other clients. We have, and will continue to be, grateful for that initial act of courage from Louise, who was willing to work with a small, unknown business to complete a high visibility, high stakes project. It put People Measures on the map.

Today, we have a thriving business, based on the efforts of all who have been involved over time. Currently the team consists of Anthony, Jamie, Frances, Nick, and Anna, as well as Kim Aitken, Georgie Smith, Natalie Livings, Jo Fisher, Lisa Everton, Lisa Johnston, and our latest Sydney based recruit, Kevin Ngo. We continue the work we are passionate about: evidence based assessment, talent management and leadership development across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. We look forward to the next 10 years and seeing how the business will evolve and change further over that time.

Our 10th birthday has snuck up on us! We were, and are, enjoying the journey and it doesn’t feel like 10 years at all. To thank everyone, our staff, our students, our partners, our associates, and our clients we have decided to make 2016 a year of celebration and there will be a series of events throughout the year, some serious and some not so serious. If you have been a part of the People Measures story in whatever capacity, expect to hear from us at some point.

If you wish to stay informed of our upcoming events please ensure that you “follow” us on LinkedIn where we will be sharing each step of our celebration.
